Special Facilities at the Rijksmuseum

The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam has special facilities for babies, young children, the disabled and the blind or visually impaired.

All groups and individuals are welcome at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Therefore, there are special facilities and equipment available to allow everyone to visit the Rijksmuseum.

Disabled: Also for the disabled, the Rijksmuseum is very accessible. Both guests in ordinary and electric wheelchairs can access the lifts and all museum rooms are wheelchair friendly. It is also possible to borrow a wheelchair during your visit at the entrance of the Rijksmuseum. (of course this is only possible if there are sufficient wheelchairs available, you may have to wait until there is one available). Babies and young children: Strollers are allowed in all halls of the Rijksmuseum. It is also possible to borrow a buggie at the information desk of the museum (you may have to have to wait until a buggy is available).

Blind and visually impaired: For our guests who are unable to move through the Rijksmuseum independently, it is allowed to bring one companion for free. A companion-card can be picked up in the Rijksmuseum at the ticket office.

Can I leave my suitcase somewhere safe?

The museum has a free (guarded), cloakroom where besides your coat also can confidently leave your purse or backpack. Handbags may be the museum (if not more than up to A3 format). We, the museum does not have space and opportunities to take large suitcases with you. However, the museum has a separate cloakroom for groups and schools. You can ask at the information desk of the museum.

Is it allowed to take pictures in the museum?

It is allowed to take pictures, provided, however, that taking pictures without flash (and possibly videos without light). It is expressly not allowed within the museum photographs, make video recordings or films where you make use of lighting equipment or flashlights or tripods (this also includes so-called selfie sticks). This is only permitted after prior written consent of the National Museum Directors.

Does the Rijksmuseum has Wifi?

How do I book when we don’t know in advance how many people will show up?

We understand that there is always a chance of last-minute mutations in a group of visitors. The Rijksmuseum therefore advises you to make an estimate number based on the information you have. For a group larger than 15 people you should pre-book tickets and pay in advance. These tickets may unfortunately not be exchanged but remain valid until the expiration date printed on the ticket. So these tickets can always be used on a future visit to the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam.

What should I do if my group has been delayed?

If your group for whatever reason is delayed for more than 15 minutes, then unfortunately your group reservation expires and your group might has to wait at the entrance until these is enough room. We advise you to call the National Museum information desk to report your delay and discuss the possibilities. Is there a commission arrangement for tour operators?

We don’t offer a commission arrangement for tour operators. Tourist groups from 15 people can purchase at tickets at a discounted rate of a € 16.50 instead of the normal ticket price of € 17.50 per adult.

Is it possible for a hotel or tour organization to buy large parties of tickets?

Every Monday afternoon between 4 and 5 pm it possible to buy presale bulk tickets at the ticket office of the museum. These bulk tickets are not tied to a specific date or a specific time. The prices for these bulk purchases (50 cards or more)  are € 16.50 per ticket instead of the regular € 17.50 per admission ticket. Signing up for bulk ticket purchases can be done by email at:

Can I pre-pay or post-pay on account?

Paying on bill for your visit not possible. Both group bookings and purchase e-tickets must be paid online.

How big may a group with a tour guide be?

The number of people with an own guide the museum visit is up 20 people. For tours with a guide from the National Museum itself, the maximum group size is set at 15 people.


Museum Library and Print Room

In the main building of the Rijksmuseum’s library, housed a reading room and a reading room. In the reading room you can consult the library collection. The reading room is open from Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 17:00. In the study it is possible to have access to all collections of the Print Room. Sunday and Monday the reading room is closed.


In the Atelier Building is a center for restoration and conservation, science, education and research based. In the Atelier Building is the knowledge of the National Museum, the National Cultural Heritage (RCE) and the University of Amsterdam (UvA) bundled in the field of restoration and conservation of artifacts.

The Teekenschool is next to the main building of the Museum at the Hobbemastraat 25. It is the educational center of the museum. Everyone is welcome here to develop their creative talents by participating in various activities. Inspiration is always gained in advance during a tour of the museum.
