About Vincent van Gogh

Vincent Willem van Gogh, together with Rembrandt van Rijn is one of the most famous Dutch painters ever. Vincent is not only known for his paintings, but also because of his dramatic life. Van Gogh was born in the Netherlands on March 30, 1853. His work is classified in art history under the post-Impressionism. The influence of Vincent van Gogh to expressionism and abstract art has been very high. At the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam you can enjoy his works and also the art of his contemporaries.

Vincent Van Gogh is considered one of the greatest painters of the 19th century. Curiously, the recognition of his work came only after his death. Just a few weeks before his death was his first and only painting sold during his lifetime. After his presumed suicide however, increased the valuation of his works.
Between his gloomy and dark painting “The Potato Eaters” (1885) and the cheerful color explosion in France at Arles (1888) is only three years. Vincent van Gogh furthermore produced all of his work in just ten years. After this he began to suffer from a mental illness that eventually led to his suicide in Auvers-sur-Oise on July 29, 1890.

The life of Vincent

Vincent Willem van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853 in the Netherlands in the village of Zundert in Brabant, near the Belgian border. Vincent’s father preacher.
When Vincent van Gogh was sixteen years old he went to work in the art trade of his uncle in The Hague and then he went to work in an art gallery in England. Vincent is stubborn and opinionated. In England he became very interested in the church and faith. He then decided that he, like his father, wanted to be a preacher. Vincent, however, was so fiercely in his sermons that the other church visitors stayed away in his sermons. Vincent was at that time very somber and sad.
Vincent van Gogh moved in 1888 to southern France. Here starts a new period in his work. He makes paintings with bright colorfull combinations. He also wants to portray the deepest feelings of people in his paintings, such as anger and love. Vincent van Gogh develops a style of his own, which people will find beautiful after his death. Nowadays thousands of artists take Vincent van Gogh as an example.

The ear of Van Gogh

Th822e French artist Paul Gauguin was staying with Van Gogh to cooperate. The two painters often had heated discussions because their views on art differed considerably. The Tensions were too much for van Gogh and he was very confused. Vincent began to show signs of confusion. Gauguin threatened to leave and this pressure was too much Vincent. Van Gogh was so confused that he threatened his friend Gauguin with a razor. Shortly afterwards Van Gogh cut off a piece of his own left ear. His ear he wrapped in an old newspaper and send it to a local prostitute.
The months after it went up and down with his health. The neighbors see that Vincent is mentally not well and make sure that Van Gogh is included in a special hospital. There, too, he can go on painting. After his discharge from the hospital van Gogh no longer want to life in the Netherlands and moved to Auvers, which is close to Paris in France

Suicide Van Gogh

The severely depressed Van Gogh shot himself at the age of 37 on July 27, 1890 in the chest with a revolver. He was thus seriously injured. He wanted to shoot himself through his heart, but made a mistake by thinking that the heart is located behind the left nipple. Van Gogh died two days later on July 29 caused by internal bleeding.
Two American art connoisseurs S. Naifeh G. White and Smith have done ten years of research on the painter. They conclude in 2011 that Van Gogh may not have committed suicide. They point out that the firearm has never been found. For now we  still believe in suicide by Van Gogh, however all new scenarios from the American research can not be excluded. The exact circumstances surrounding the death of Van Gogh have never been cleared up completely.

Famous Van Gogh paintings

Also, hundreds of books have been written about his life and his works. Yet he became famous after his death. During the period when Van Gogh was alive people had no interest in his works. Van Gogh only painted the last decade of his life. He painted and drew incredible much. There are more than nine hundred drawings and nearly eight hundred paintings known. During his lifetime, Vincent van Gogh probably only sold one painting.

The most famous Van Gogh paintings are The Potato Eaters, Sunflowers and Bedroom in Arles. But of course there are many other wonderful works by this artist which can be admired at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands
