The number of visitors to Amsterdam has increased to 17 million over the last five years. That is an increase of more than 3.5 percent. Also, almost doubling occurred in the number of days they stayed in the capital (plus 94 percent), according to the Amsterdam Marketing Visitor Research. The survey investigated 12,000 domestic visitors and tourists.
Almost half of the visitors to Amsterdam come from the Netherlands. The main reason to visit Amsterdam are the cultural attractions. More than a third of our visitors visit Amsterdam for its museums and attractions. Most visitors go to the Rijksmuseum, Anne Frank House. And Amsterdam has much more to offer.
Due to the number of so-called visiting days, the amount of visitors spending increased: from over 17 billion euros in 2011 to 18.8 billion euros in 2016. That also led to employment in Amsterdam. According to the official city marketing agency, which has city promotion as its core business, an increase in the number of days people in the city continued to increase employment in 86 percent. The number of jobs generated directly or indirectly by visits to the city increased to 154,500, up 86 percent.
